Your Dark Hair in the Yellow Flames

from Songbones 88-84 by Jeff Smith

/

about

An incantation. At the time I was reading a lot of Stephen King and I think the tenor of his stories have leaked into this and maybe two other songs.

lyrics

YOUR DARK HAIR
IN THE YELLOW FLAMES
(w&m JeffSmith c1982)

Hey we are all looking through the glass
We see different scenes of what may pass
A crystal ball with deceptive moves,
dark magic circles lines and screws.

I remember the first time we met
The chemical reactions were a dare and a bet
Then I saw you in another light
The surface dissolved and everything went white

Sometimes I'm dreaming in bright colors
And I can hear you say my name
I turn away and I from these memories
Of your dark hair in the yellow flames

I was allowed one moment's glance
When I held you in broken hands
Terror and danger in a life of suspense
I'm all tied up in sickening spins.

Your sharp blue teeth and your frozen stare
Your magic so wicked so terrible and rare
I see your vapor in the hall
I hear the scratching of your claws

about

Jeff Smith Virginia

Inspired and influenced by early country, blues, rock and pop
Jeff Smith writes songs and tells elongated and elliptical stories about them. Jeff's Appalachian drawl slides in and around his guitar playing and Smith says “on a good night the stories and songs swing on top of a funky kind of country blues pop stomp”. Now residing in the swamps of Virginia, Smith performs club gigs and
concerts.
