about

This song was written around the same time as I was writing The Human Wilderness but was never recorded at the time. About three years ago while practicing for a job, Claude Arthur and I ran this song a couple of times and recorded it as you hear it. I was so happy that Claude was able to suss it out and give such a simpatico performance, glad, but not surprised, as Claude is a great listener/player.

lyrics

I Know Someday

You said you were leaving
And Headed out West
Everybody said
It might be for the best

I thought I what I wanted
Was what you did too
But I can't make you stay
No matter what I try to do

You said you had
To leave this world behind
And no one else
Could ever change your mind

I gave up wondering
I let go of the rope
It was too much to hold onto
When I gave up hope

I don't know how you're gonna do it
I don't know why when or where
But I know someday baby
You're gonna break my heart

I went out driving
Over roads we knew well
Remembered conversations
We'd never have to tell

And sometimes when the wind
Starts to bend the rain
I see your face like smoke
I hear it whisper your name

I don't know how you're gonna do it
I don't know why when or where
But I know someday baby
You're gonna break my heart

about

Jeff Smith Virginia

Inspired and influenced by early country, blues, rock and pop
Jeff Smith writes songs and tells elongated and elliptical stories about them. Jeff's Appalachian drawl slides in and around his guitar playing and Smith says “on a good night the stories and songs swing on top of a funky kind of country blues pop stomp”. Now residing in the swamps of Virginia, Smith performs club gigs and
concerts.
